About The Artwork
expand_more
Cherries is a vibrant and tactile sculptural work by Anastasia Mykolayska Shutka, blending playful form with intricate tradition. Using a diverse range of materials—MDF, clay, Styrofoam, embroidery floss, and acrylic plastic—this original artwork reimagines the iconic fruit as a cultural and symbolic object. The oversized cherries are adorned with hand-embroidered patterns inspired by Ukrainian folk textiles, transforming them into richly textured emblems of vitality, femininity, and sweetness.
The stem and leaf, sculpted in clay and painted in lush green hues, add a lively contrast to the deep reds and blacks of the cherries themselves. Encased within a clear acrylic silhouette, the piece maintains a crisp modernity while honoring heritage craft. Cherries is both whimsical and meaningful, making it a standout statement piece that merges fine art, pop form, and folk tradition.

About the artist

Anastasia Mykolayska Shutka is a London-born Ukrainian artist whose art focuses on Ukrainian culture and history. This theme emerged when Anastasia realized that having been raised in the UK, she did not feel as connected to her culture as she would have liked. Consequently, she took the initiative to research Ukraine's traditions and language, which began to influence her art.Growing up, Shutka was exposed to embroidery, model-making, and various other artistic practices that she enjoyed exploring. This led to a multidisciplinary approach to creation. Her work now encompasses painting and the use of laser cutters to produce 3D embroidered elements, drawing inspiration from folk and embroidery traditions. Her art is centered around Ukraine. It celebrates Ukrainians and explores Ukraine's independent and true identity.
