About the artist

Allie Sutherland is a New York
based artist whose work explores the liminal spaces between memory and dream
and the human and spiritual realms. Trained as a classical architect,
Sutherland is drawn to structure while allowing it to yield to intuition. Her
compositions begin with initial strokes made by her non-dominant hand.  This is a practice designed to connect with
and stimulate the subconscious mind, allowing form to emerge through discovery
rather than control. Sutherland’s work is rooted in mythology and spirituality,
drawing upon the timeless narratives that inform timeless human experience and
shape human consciousness. Sutherland uses color and tactile texture to create
compositions that exist on a continuum between abstraction and representation.
These ethereal yet structured pieces reflect her architectural background,
balancing free-flowing, intuitive gestures with a sense of order and
permanence. Through her practice, Sutherland aims to intertwine symbolism,
history, and emotion. Each work is meant to serve as a portal to the
subconscious, where rhythm, color, and texture evoke a visual synesthesia,
translating internal states into form and inviting viewers to engage with what
lies beneath the surface of perception.
